JOHANNESBURG - South Africa’s four international airports have received an endorsement by the International Aviation Council for their health and safety preparedness.
Airports Council International(ACI) has awarded a public health and safety readiness accreditation to the OR Tambo, King Shaka, Cape Town and Chief Dawid Stuurman international airports.
The ACI assesses airports on their ability to adapt their protocols and plan for unforeseen health crises.
The COVID-19 pandemic represented a turning point for the global aviation industry.
Airports were at the centre of most countries’ health response strategies in terms of limiting the spread of the deadly virus.
In a statement, Airports Company South Africa (ACSA) says it's important that all its facilities have a comprehensive health response plan as airports are critical transportation hubs and present a high risk for transmissible diseases.
ACSA says it plans to have all nine of its airports accredited by 2029.
