JOHANNESBURG - The charges against Advocate Dali Mpofu (SC) have been dismissed as an attempt to instill fear within black legal practitioners by his supporters.
The senior legal practitioner was meant to appear before an independent disciplinary committee on Wednesday after the Legal Practice Council (LPC) accused him of violating its code of conduct.
The hearing was postponed owing to a power outage and the amendment of the charge sheet.
But Mpofu's backers echoed the same sentiments as the senior counsel that the charges were frivolous and meant to intimidate black legal practitioners.
Impeached public protector, Busisiwe Mkhwebane was one of them.
"We are fighting the system here. It has nothing to do with Advocate Mpofu, it has nothing to do with Busisiwe Mkhwebane, Judge John Hlophe and any person but it has to do with creating that sense of fear in the black professionals. In the times of slavery, they will hang the slave in front of others to create that fear. So this is happening and it's so subtle, so we can't allow that."
