CAPE TOWN - The South African National Parks (SANParks) is expected to conduct an aerial survey of the fire damage to Silvermine on Thursday and confirm the extent of the damage to trails.

The fire, which broke out on Friday, has been contained, and mopping up operations are now underway.

At least 3000 hectares of vegetation have been destroyed by the blaze at Table Mountain National Park.

SANParks officials say that although the fire is now contained, the Upper Tokai, Silvermine, Constantia Nek, Boyes Drive, and Clovelly areas of Table Mountain National Park remain potentially hazardous for visitors.

Hikers, mountain bikers, and all members of the public are urged to avoid these areas until further notice while the trail closures are in place.

SANParks officials say firefighters are still in place, monitoring the situation and ready to respond to any flare-ups.

Chapman's Peak and the East Fort trails are also expected to open today.
