JOHANNESBURG - Non-profit organisation Forum for South Africa (FOSA) is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to fast-track the process of signing the National Health Insurance (NHI) into law.

This was after a Johannesburg Metro police officer was denied emergency care due to the city’s outstanding medical bill.

The organisation said the hospital's actions were inhumane.

FOSA leader, Tebogo Mashilompane, said the recent incident was an indication that the NHI Bill would ensure that no one was denied medical care.

"The working class and the poor cannot suffer any longer at the hands of those who are chasing profit at the expense of lives. Access to health facilities is a fundamental human right, so NHI will make that possible."
