CAPE TOWN – While Tuesday marks exactly a year since the George building collapse, Parliament is still calling for heads to roll and the building developer to be prosecuted.
The chairperson of the portfolio committee on Human Settlements, Mammoga Seabi, also wants a full review of the processes followed by the National Homebuilders Registration Council (NHBRC).
Seabi briefed the media as part of Parliament’s social cluster on Monday.
The collapse of the five-storey development in George, known as 75 Victoria, resulted in the deaths of 34 people.

Seabi says while the NHBRC is acting on its officials, the committee wants law enforcement to step up to the plate.
“While the committee welcomed the assurance that some employees of the NHBRC are undergoing disciplinary processes, we emphasise the need for law enforcement agencies to expedite and prosecute the developer who has shown complete disregard for building standards.”
Seabi said families of those who died deserve justice and called for the minister to start the process of blacklisting the contractor.
