CAPE TOWN - The portfolio committee on human settlements has added its voice to the George building collapse, saying that "regrettable" administrative lapses contributed to the tragedy.

Chairperson of the committee, Mammoga Seabi, said that members of the committee now wanted a full review of the National Home Builders Registration Council (NHBRC), which he said was central in the tragedy.

Seabi was addressing a cluster briefing in Parliament on Monday, a day before the communities of George mark exactly a year since the building tragedy.

"In terms of the report to the portfolio committee by the minister, there were administrative lapses that contributed to the George building collapse, which are regrettable."

He said that this called for a deeper look into the processes of the NHBRC.

"The committee has called for a full review of the internal processes within the NHBRC. Officials must be held fully accountable."
