CAPE TOWN - Deputy President Paul Mashatile said it was not always politicians who created problems in local government, citing that officials were mostly involved.
Mashatile said that there would be consequences for poor-performing officials, as government launches phase two of Operational Vulindlela to address structural constraints in local government.
Mashatile was responding to oral questions from MPs in the National Assembly around local government interventions.
"In some of the municipalities, it's not the politicians that are creating problems, it's actually the officials of the municipalities. So, there will definitely be consequences."
Mashatile said they hoped to turnaround the top ten most dysfunctional municipalities as part of the intervention by next year's elections.
"We will try our best to ensure that, as we get to local government elections, a lot of these are attended to."
