As people move away from carrying cash with them, how much or whether they tip informal workers sometimes suffers.
That's where digital tipping platforms are starting to play an important role.
Tipping reports that use of its digital wallet system is boosting the earning power of car guards and petrol attendants specifically.
'I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw through our reporting that the new average tip amount for car guards and petrol attendants is R30!' Tipping CEO Kimlynn Temple exclaims in an update posted on on social media.
This signifies a growing recognition of the essential services these workers provide daily, she says.

It's a psychological shift they're seeing, Temple tells Stephen Grootes.
"As opposed to handing over money for a tip, digging for a R5 or R10 or whatever you may have available, you can now tip digitally through the mechanism we've enabled. This shift to increasing tips has been a beautiful thing to see!"

According to their stats, fuel attendants for example are receiving 12-20 tips a day.
Multiply that by R30 and more, and this extra 'pay' can make a huge difference to breadwinners and families.
"One fuel attendant that we signed up told me recently that he's gotten over R4 000 worth of tips in his Tipped wallet."

This is especially important considering a trend where many service providers are not allowing the bill and the tip to be included in the point-of-sale device, because it's an administrative burden.
"Not only are we uplifting and empowering individuals through the digital wallet, but on top of that we're actually revolutionising tipping cultures and tipping processes."
