CAPE TOWN - The Cape Town traffic department has confirmed that Malibongwe Drive in the Dunoon area remains closed due to protests.
Residents have been protesting since Monday due to city law enforcement officers demolishing three walls erected by a resident.
Residents claim they were not notified or warned about the decision to break down the walls.
Tensions increased as police arrived at the protest in riot gear.
Spokesperson for the city's law enforcement, Wayne Dyason, said that the action was carried out in terms of a final court order.
"This is after three walls that were built unlawfully with brick and mortar were demolished. Please note no structures were demolished, the walls were not occupied, and the action was carried out in terms of a final court order. The walls were identified by city officials and the owners were served notices to remove the walls, but they failed to comply."
PR councilor and acting ward councillor for Dunoon, Thando Dedezane, said that he has met with community leaders to try and calm the situation.
"Well, yesterday I managed to have a meeting with community leaders just to get an element of calm and just to pull back to see whatever they're doing so that we can get the city and the line department that could be involved in whatever to come to the table and have a discussion on whatever the community that side is in grievances with."
