JOHANNESBURG - Residents in Johannesburg who are involved in the unauthorised sale of electricity have been warned of potential legal consequences.
The power utility said it had taken note of the various adverts circulating on social media with offers of discounted electricity units.
The utility said its security risk team, as well as law enforcement, was actively pursuing individuals who had been identified as the sellers.
City Power’s spokesperson, Isaac Mangena, said they had intensified their efforts to end the fraudulent schemes that threatened the integrity of their power distribution system.
"We strongly condemn both the sale and purchase of illicit electricity units. These transactions are illegal, invalid, and pose serious risks to customers, including service disruptions and potential legal consequences. Electricity must only be purchased through authorised and official vendors. Any other point of sale is a direct violation of the law and City Power’s supply protocols."
