JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Service (EMS) is calling for extra caution following a concerning rise in fire incidents.
In the latest incident, one person died in a fire in Magaliessig, north of Johannesburg.
The cause of the blaze is still under investigation.
This week, emergency services responded to three major fire incidents, including one that claimed the lives of four children.
Spokesperson Xolie Khumalo has warned against leaving flames or heating devices running while unattended.
He said it's also advisable to keep anything that can burn away from heaters or open flames and not plug too many devices into one power point.
"EMS urges all Johannesburg residents to exercise caution when using electrical appliances, and to always ensure that children are not left unattended. Public safety remains our top priority, and we encourage everyone to follow fire prevention guidelines to help protect lives and property."
