A standoff between delivery motorbike riders and the Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) has resulted in more than 20 bikes being impounded in the city centre.
The TMPD stated the incident unfolded during a routine public transport patrol when officers attempted to stop a delivery rider for a standard inspection. According to police, the rider fled the scene before being stopped a short while later at the intersection of Visagie Street and Prince’s Park Avenue.
Authorities say the situation escalated when a group of approximately 40 motorbike riders arrived at the scene and blocked the road, attempting to prevent officers from continuing with their inspection.
Officers called for backup. Following further checks, officials discovered several of the bikes were not roadworthy or failed to comply with the National Road Traffic Act.
Under Tshwane bylaws, delivery motorbikes operating in the city must be: Roadworthy, properly registered and operated by riders who can produce valid driver’s licences and identification upon request.
The TMPD noted that some riders fled the scene before their documents or immigration status could be verified. In total, 23 delivery motorbikes were impounded.
"Any attempts to obstruct law enforcement operations will be dealt with decisively," the police stated.
