JOHANNESBURG - Deputy President Paul Mashatile has reaffirmed his dedication to combating corruption, emphasising that it has played a role in the decline of public trust in government.

Mashatile made these remarks during a roundtable discussion on improving governance at the Sefako Makgatho Presidential Guest House in Pretoria on Friday.

The meeting brings together senior government officials with the aim of aligning public representatives and institutions in executing the state’s priorities.

In recent months, Mashatile has placed significant emphasis on tackling corruption, consistently addressing the issue in his public speeches.

This time, Mashatile stated that corruption within state institutions is moving one step forward but slipping two steps back.

"Corruption in both public and private sector erodes public trust in government and undermines service delivery, impacting the most vulnerable in our society."

Mashatile said that the failure of government officials to carry out state priorities is also a cause for concern.

"It is important to highlight that the lack of consistency in leadership and institutional memory, particularly of director generals, compromises the government’s ability to implement and oversee policies in the long term."

Several premiers are also attending Friday's gathering in hopes of ensuring their respective provinces align with the national government’s plan to improve governance.
