CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Education MEC David Maynier has confirmed that the appeals process for parents whose children were not accepted at a preferred school will open on 1 August.

During this process, parents will be given the opportunity to detail their complaints about the process.

Maynier said, however, that each school had different admissions policies and children were accepted based on those policies.

He added that the department could not control which school a child was accepted at.

"Most important thing to understand is it's schools that are making the admissions decisions. Sometimes there’s a perception that it's the Western Cape Education Department making admission decisions, that is not true, schools make admission decisions, and they make those admission decisions in terms of unique admissions policies."

Maynier emphasised that there was still time for children to receive placement offers.

"My advice to the parents who have not received an offer is, in the first instance, to approach the school and ensure that your child is on a waiting list. Bear in mind there’s still time, schools will be making admissions decisions all the way until the 31st of July."
