DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal’s Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) is calling for calm in Mondlo, following growing concerns over electricity supply disruptions.
Residents have been protesting this week over ongoing service delivery challenges.
The department held an engagement with the community on Friday, where locals raised concerns about daily electricity outages, especially during peak morning and evening hours.
They also voiced their frustration with the broader quality of service delivery in the area.
KwaZulu-Natal COGTA MEC Thulasizwe Buthelezi has acknowledged the frustrations expressed by residents over electricity switch-offs in the AbaQulusi Local Municipality.
Addressing community members, Buthelezi conceded that the way in which electricity disconnections were implemented could have been handled better.
“We were able to brief the councillors of AbaQulusi about what practical steps can be done to ensure that the damage which was caused does not happen again.” said Buthelezi
Buthelezi has condemned the burning of municipal offices by protesters, calling on residents to express their concerns without breaking the law.
The department said it’s working with Eskom and the AbaQulusi Municipality to come up with sustainable, practical solutions to the electricity challenges affecting the community.
