JOHANNESBURG - Eskom said it loses R7 billion annually due to illegal connections and non-technical issues in Gauteng, leading to its challenges with supplying electricity.
In Soweto alone, the losses stand at R3 million a day since 2020.

To manage supply, it has to conduct load reduction across the province. However, residents in Zondi, Jabulani, and Zola are unhappy about the prolonged power outages.
Gauteng Eskom spokesperson Amanda Qithi said the residents can improve the situation by connecting electricity legally.
“Customers need to stop bypassing their meters, they need to stop conducting illegal connections because those are the things that are causing the transformers to overload, and they need to make sure they are buying from registered vendors.”
