AI-generated content has shown a rapid improvement, but have we now reached the level where professional film production companies might be at risk of being made redundant?
CapeTalk's John Maytham spoke to Wian van Bergen, a partner and creative director at Lucan Studio in Cape Town.
Van Bergen said: "I know there's a lot of noise out there at the moment. You know, people say on social media that Hollywood is dead; you can just prompt and get your full-length feature film. But I think anyone who's used AI before will know that's not true, so I don't think AI is replacing artists; it's definitely raising the bar.
"I think the question is how do studios and artists remain competitive but still create something that's valuable to their clients.
"Even how we approach a pitch these days, that's one of the most important parts of a project, where you actually win the project. The pitches that we do these days are almost like a finished shot with motion and everything. And to create something like that a year or two ago would've taken weeks, but now we can do it in a few days. So if you don't use AI, it's going to be really tricky to compete with your peers."
That said, he thinks the industry may be reaching a plateau in terms of AI technology. "At least in terms of what we're doing... I can see the technology; it's an incredible tool. It's such a powerful tool to have in our arsenal. But the gains that it's made from two years ago, until the gains it's making now every month, you can see it's kind of tapering off a little bit."
Van Bergen believes there's going to be a Renaissance at some point. "Where human-made content will have much more value."
