CAPE TOWN - Humanitarian organisation Gift of the Givers, along with disaster response teams, have been deployed to multiple informal settlements following devastating fires that broke out early Saturday morning.
The NGO is currently providing emergency aid in the Silvertown informal settlement in Khayelitsha and Thembalethu in George, where multiple homes were destroyed.
Spokesperson Ali Sablay said hot meals, bottled water, blankets, hygiene supplies, and building materials are being distributed to those affected.
"In the past seven days, our teams have assisted the fire victims of Khayelitsha, Kosovo, and Samora Machel, where homes have been gutted, leaving hundreds of people displaced," said Sablay.
Sablay added that teams are currently conducting assessments to determine any additional needs.
"We will extend our operation to the next five to seven days to provide humanitarian relief to the affected families. Hot meals will continue, and from tomorrow we will expand our distributions to include toiletry packs and warm clothing.”
