JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Health in Gauteng said it’s ramping up the installation of new equipment at some of the province’s key health facilities in a bid to improve patient care.

This includes a set of eight new magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines at the Steve Biko Academic Hospital, Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital, and Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital.

The machines are used to diagnose medical conditions, monitor treatment, and assess internal organs.

Some hospitals are under pressure due to a shortage of equipment, with the department recently under fire for a long waiting list for patients needing to undergo surgery at different health facilities.

Gauteng Health Department spokesperson Motalatale Modiba said the latest installations are part of efforts to address ageing infrastructure.

“Measures are in place to improve access, to minimise down time, and fast track waiting lists in terms of patients who need MRI scans.”
