MTHATHA - The Eastern Cape provincial government has confirmed that the death toll from the devastating floods remains at 101, with a 12-month-old baby named as the youngest victim.

Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) MEC Zolile Williams announced during a media briefing in Mthatha on Thursday, as search-and-recovery teams enter a third week of operations.

Rescuers are still searching the Mthatha River for more victims, including two children aged eight and 12, who disappeared when bridges collapsed and homes were swept away.

The briefing comes as a new cold front hits parts of the province, with heavy rain and snowfall forecast for high-lying areas.

Williams says the death toll may still climb.
