JOHANNESBURG - The Investigative Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) believes it has a strong case against corruption and fraud accused Crime Intelligence head, Dumisani Khumalo, and his six co-accused.

Khumalo was arrested on Thursday with six others for appointing a 30-year-old Pretoria woman to head up a department within Crime Intelligence responsible for national covert operations.

Dineo Mokwele was appointed as the technical support system manager within Crime Intelligence and given the rank of brigadier, having no formal qualifications within the South African Police Service (SAPS).

She is accused of falsifying qualifications on her CV.

Last year, Mokwele was working for a vehicle dealership in Gauteng before she was appointed to head up the technical support system within Crime Intelligence - a highly specialised division for covert operations.

Mokwele bagged the job with a cushy net salary of more than 50k per month, despite having relevant qualifications and having never been a SAPS member.

This was made possible through her six co-accused, including Khumalo and the head of Crime Intelligence in Gauteng, Josias Lekalakala.

During their appearance in the Pretoria Magistrates Court on Friday afternoon, prosecutor Joy Hlatshwayo emphasised that Mokwele falsely claimed that she had an MBA, a requirement for the position.

"The investigations show that the accused registered for this MBA in 2024 and she hasn’t completed the qualification as alleged by her defence."

The case was postponed to August.
