His 20-year-long professional career came to an end last year when he hung up his boots following a stint with Cape Town City.
He played for several PSL teams, including AmaZulu, Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch FC.
“I got to a point where mentally, I was drained. The constant having to look after yourself, the constant knowing your opposition or the small little issues everyday at training, the contracts… I said to myself this is my last season and I am glad I got to make the decision myself.”
– Marc van Heerden
His time away from the field didn’t last long, as shortly after retirement, Van Heerden completed his UEFA B Coaching Licence.
He is now one of the assistant coaches at Sekhukhune United FC under the newly appointed Erik Tinkler.

“I was very surprised… but I don’t think I would want to start my coaching journey with anyone else. The last couple of months have been so informative, I have learned so much and I’ve just enjoyed gaining experience from him.”

Reflecting on his days at Cape Town City, Van Heerden says it is tough to see the team get relegated from the PSL this year.

He hopes the team will continue to build and come back stronger.
“You feel heavy-hearted when such moments and situations happen in football, but this is the game… If you don’t put your best foot forward every game, these are the situations that you find yourself in. I feel for the people of Cape Town.”
