JOHANNESBURG - About 8,000 Gauteng teacher assistants were not paid their salaries for last June.

The provincial department of education said the delays were due to verification issues, which are handled by the National Department of Basic Education for all beneficiaries of this programme.

The assistants were recruited on 1 June as part of the provincial government's plan to create job opportunities for previously unemployed youths and assist overburdened teachers in Gauteng's public schools.

Department spokesperson, Steve Mabona, has apologised for the delays and assured affected assistants they will be paid by the end of July.

"While the DBE did indicate that these processes were intended to strengthen accountability and reduce the risk of fraud, they have caused a widespread delay to the release of payments to some candidates, including in Gauteng."
