JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Education said the first payments of some of its recruits will be delayed owing to setbacks in its verification process.
As part of the National Basic Education Employment Initiative, thousands of new education and general assistants were placed in schools across the province from 1 June 2025.
Department Spokesperson Steven Mabona said approximately 8,000 assistants will not receive their payments this month as many are still being verified.
“As a result, only assistants whose details have been verified and cleared will receive their stipends, and that will happen in batches. Those still undergoing verification will be paid once their data is finalised. The department is working tirelessly to complete this process before the end of July.”
