The body will now present a report to President Cyril Ramaphosa on Mlambo’s suitability and the other two candidates, Free State Judge President Cagney Musi and Northern Cape Judge President Pule Tlaletsi.
Judges Matter’s research and advocacy officer, Mbekezeli Benjamin, said, “Judge Mlambo presented the most compelling vision for the future of the judiciary.
“Drawing from his leadership successes as judge president of the Gauteng High Court, including the rolling out of the Court Online system and successes at institutions outside the judiciary.”
Benjamin said Mlambo’s recommendation comes at a crucial point in the country.
“The South African judiciary is at a crucial point of transition as it establishes its own institutional independence.
“We look to Judge Mlambo working with Chief Justice Maya and other judicial leaders to address the shortage of judges, the lack of resources in our courts, and other problems so that more South Africans can get access to justice much faster.”
