CAPE TOWN - As confusion mounts over halted social grant payments, the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) said its review of social grant recipients was a routine but necessary step.
It said it needed to ensure that only eligible beneficiaries continued to receive support.
The agency outlined what the review entailed and what documents beneficiaries needed to bring when called for verification.
In a statement posted to its official X account, SASSA said the review was meant to verify whether recipients were still alive, residing in South Africa, and still met the requirements for their specific grant.
The agency said it was aware of growing frustration among some beneficiaries but insisted the process was to ensure that only qualifying individuals continued to receive financial support and root out fraudulent claims.
Those required to undergo a review must visit their nearest SASSA office with their South African identity document, proof of address, and any documents that confirm their income or dependency status, such as bank statements or affidavits.
SASSA has urged grant recipients not to ignore notices or messages regarding their review, and to contact the agency if they’re unsure about the status of their payment.
