After years of performing on global stages and singing the national anthem for many Springboks matches, Gqeberha-born powerhouse Belinda Davids will sing it again in her home town for the first time before South Africa takes on Italy for the second time at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, 12 July.
While Davids has sung the anthem at other Test matches, this is the first time she'll perform Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika in the city where she grew up - what a homecoming!
"I'm excited... at home, it's big for me. I'm going to do it respectfully... It's a personal thing. I'm a patriot... I'm going to sing it the way it should be sung."
- Belinda Davids
"The last time I did the national anthem, the most emotional time for me was when I sang this song in Covid and when I walked out, the atmosphere was so thick and I felt so emotional... There was no one in the stadium, it was just me and the players... it was very emotional."
- Belinda Davids
