CAPE TOWN - According to a recent study, older people are becoming a prime target for online scams.
The research by Dr Suleman Lazarus, a sociologist affiliated with the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and academics from the University of Surrey and the University of Portsmouth, sheds light on how older adults are being deliberately targeted.
They found that criminals are preying on the elderly and banking on the idea that they are not as tech savvy as younger people.
UWC Communications Officer, Harriet Box, explained what the researchers suggest, older people can do to protect themselves.
"Dr Lazarus advises senior citizens to pause and question everything and to always seek a second opinion, he advises older people to talk to children or grandchildren or someone they trust and recommends not being tempted to act immediately when asked for personal information, he says to ignore it, not to click on any links and to never share banking details and passwords.”
