JOHANNESBURG - The uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party in Gauteng wants police to explain the real reasons behind the high crime rates in the province.

Mkhwanazi recently made allegations of a criminal syndicate within the top brass of the country’s law enforcement agencies.

During an explosive media briefing on 6 July, Mkhwanazi made several allegations relating to Gauteng.

Key among them was the allegation of a drug cartel operating in Gauteng, which he said involves politicians, law enforcement, judicial officers, and high-profile business people.

MK Party Gauteng spokesperson Abel Tau said Mkhwanazi’s allegations explain to some extent why the province has the highest crime rate in the country.

“We are calling on the provincial [SAPS] commissioner to take the residents of Gauteng into confidence as you would have seen the latest crime stats that Gauteng is not improving in terms of violent crimes.”

As a result of the allegations, President Cyril Ramaphosa has announced the establishment of a commission of inquiry to look into allegations of corruption within the country’s law enforcement agencies.
