JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Education Department is investigating allegations of abuse in the case of the late Jayden-Lee Meek.

The 11-year-old was killed in May this year and found outside his home in Fleurhof, Johannesburg.

In a shocking turn of events, his mother, Tiffany Meek, was arrested for his murder and made her first appearance before the Roodepoort Magistrates Court on Monday.

However, provincial education authorities now say they have reason to believe that the young boy may have been a victim of abuse before his murder.

Officials are currently meeting with school management at Royal College in Florida, Roodepoort, where the slain boy was a learner until his life was cut short.

Gauteng education department spokesperson, Steve Mabona, said: "We received allegations that the child might have reported this abuse at a school, so that's why we decided that let's be on a fact-finding mission. Our officials are already here at the school. We don't know what happened, so we felt that we needed to come to the school."

Mabona said action must be taken.

"We are interacting with the school and there will be a portion to furnish us with information and then we'll take it from there, because if such an incident or incidents of potential abuse were reported and nothing happened, we need to understand on why and if there's consequence management that needs to be recommended."
