CAPE TOWN - Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni has assured Parliament that intelligence structures would submit themselves to the judicial commission of inquiry into the police.
Ntshavheni, who is the minister responsible for the State Security Agency (SSA), gave the assurance while tabling her department’s budget in Parliament on Tuesday.
The commission, announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa on Sunday, is expected to put the spotlight on law enforcement and crime intelligence structures.
This follows the release of damning allegations of corruption in the police by KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi.
Crime intelligence is expected to form an integral part of the commission of inquiry to be headed by Deputy Chief Justice Mbuyiseli Madlanga.
Parliament’s own inquiry into Mkhwanazi’s allegations will also involve the joint committee on intelligence, which will process sensitive information involving intelligence structures.
Ntshavheni told the National Assembly that state security structures would be more than willing to avail themselves to the commission.
"As I table this vote, we want to commit that SSA and all the national intelligence structures that I’m responsible for, we will avail ourselves to the Judge Madlanga commission of inquiry as announced by the president."
Ntshavheni said her department was also addressing malfeasance within intelligence, as well as allegations of unethical conduct.
