CAPE TOWN - The Cape Crime Crisis Coalition has called for unity in the fight against gang violence and crime in the Western Cape.

A surge of ongoing gang-related shootings has left several people dead in Cape Town recently.

Various civil society and religious organisations held a meeting in Lansdowne on Wednesday, hosted by the Muslim Judicial Council, to discuss solutions.

Cape Crime Crisis Coalition chairperson, Llewellyn MacMaster, said that churches and mosques were the custodians of moral values in society.

MacMaster said that there was a serious lack of moral fibre in Cape Town's communities.

"That's where religion and faith comes in. We've got to preach moral regeneration. We've handed that to the government, so we need to take that responsibility for the moral crises."

MacMaster also called for unity in the fight against gang violence.

"I'm proclaiming and pleading and praying for unity. We are not united. We are sometimes territorial, like the gangs."

The coalition and the MJC are awaiting feedback after handing Western Cape SAPS a memorandum this week.
