JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Health Department has rubbished claims that a number of African National Congress (ANC) Youth League members have scored board posts at the province's hospitals that offer generous payouts.

This follows reports in the Sunday Times on Sunday, alleging that some ANC Youth League leaders have landed cushy hospital board posts.

This includes politicians without the correct qualifications.

In a strongly worded response by the department, provincial health spokesperson Motalatale Modiba denied allegations that there has been political interference in board appointments.

“Such claims are not only baseless but insulting to the more than 200 highly qualified professionals who have volunteered to serve their communities in a role that is not remunerative.”

Modiba said claims that board members are paid an easy R10,000 cheque per meeting are also untrue.

“Ordinary board members receive an honorarium of R160.00 per hour, capped at R1 900.00 per month, while chairpersons receive R210.00 per hour, capped at R3 500.00 per month – as per Circular No. 59 of 2023. These amounts are not salaries; they are modest allowances meant solely to cover transport and incidental expenses.”
