JOHANNESBURG - The Democratic Alliance (DA) has given Johannesburg mayor Dada Morero seven days to respond to Kenny Kunene’s resignation from the city council.

Kunene’s resignation was announced on Saturday by Patriotic Alliance (PA) leader Gayton McKenzie on social media platform X.

It followed Kunene’s controversial appearance outside the home of murder-accused Katiso ‘KT’ Molefe, who has been linked to the killing of popular musician Oupa Sefoka, known as DJ Sumbody.

In his resignation letter, Kunene said he would step away from public life to allow his party, the PA, to investigate the allegations made against him.

Kunene’s presence at the home of Molefe, who was recently identified by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi as one of the individuals allegedly infiltrating law enforcement, has caused public outcry.

The incident led to Kunene’s suspension as deputy president of the PA and as MMC for transport in Johannesburg.

Kunene maintains that his visit to Molefe’s home on the day of a police raid and Molefe’s arrest was not for any unlawful reason.

Now, the DA wants Morero to investigate all contracts handled by Kunene during his time as MMC.

"While Mr Kunene is no longer a councillor, the DA still demands the investigations as per our letter to the mayor. These include a full investigation into all contracts and procurement processes at the Johannesburg Roads Agency,” said DA Johannesburg caucus leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku.

She said if the Mayor fails to respond, the DA will use all available channels to hold the executive accountable.
