CAPE TOWN - The Good Party has called on the City of Cape Town's council Speaker to step down after an Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) councillor was allegedly choked by a security officer during a council meeting.
EFF councillor Mzubanzi Dambuza said he lost consciousness while being choked by a security officer after he refused to leave the council chamber.
Dambuza said that Speaker Felicity Purchase instructed him to leave after he complained about being heckled by DA councillors.
Good Party councillor, Roscoe Palm, said that Purchase failed to apply the rules of order fairly and consistently.
"The Speaker must step aside. Her continued presence in that role has now resulted in a grievous assault on a public representative, all because he dared to ask a question. Her actions, inactions and biases have resulted in violence and thuggery that has endangered lives."
The city is yet to respond to EWN's request for a response.
