JOHANNESBURG - Joburg City Power is urging its customers to use electricity sparingly as a cold snap across the province has put increased strain on the power grid.
The power utility said colder temperatures often lead to a significant spike in electricity demand because residents use heating devices and other high-usage appliances to keep warm.
Joburg City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena warns that as a result, the electricity network is likely to come under severe pressure, adding that it increases the risk of unplanned outages.
“With the cold front expected to grip most of the province, even Johannesburg, we are urging our customers to use electricity sparingly. And ensure that they turn off most of the power-guzzling equipment, including the heaters or multiple heaters, the geysers and also the pool pumps.”
