CAPE TOWN - The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a severe weather warning for the Western Cape and Namaqua regions, with a cold front expected to make landfall this weekend.

Western Cape disaster risk reduction director Nabeel Rylands said damaging waves are expected to batter the coast as cold, wet and windy conditions make their way across the province on Saturday and Sunday.

"A cold front is expected on Saturday, 09 August, bringing gale force winds and waves of up to six metres high between Cape Columbine and Plettenberg Bay."

Rylands has urged communities along the coast, including Cape Town, George, Mossel Bay, and Overstrand to take precautions.

"Small boats and kayaks should stay out of the water and beach goers must be alert to large unpredictable waves."

Rylands said full details of the storm's possible impact can be found on the SAWS website.
