JOHANNESBURG - As the country commemorates Women’s Day, South African churches are calling for stronger collaboration to fight against gender based-violence (GBV) and femicide.

South Africa has one of the highest rates of GBV, including femicide, rape, and intimate partner violence in the world.

The Human Science Research Council (HSRC) said that more than 7 million women experience physical and sexual violence in their lifetime.

The spokesperson of the South African Union Council of Independent Churches (SAUCIC), Pastor Lesiba Kgwele: "As SAUCIC, we implore women to reject the shackles of patriarchal oppression that have subjugated them over centuries and to demand their rightful places in decision-making processes. A radical social-economic transformation has to empower and affirm them as change agents to drive the development agenda in our communities."
