Calls mount for bail to be opposed for Eldorado Park couple charged with murder, rape, abuse of their child

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng portfolio committee on community safety is calling for bail to be opposed for the parents charged with the murder, rape, and abuse of their four-year-old child.

The couple from Eldorado Park, Soweto, will be appearing for a second time at the Protea Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

The child was discovered by community members on Wednesday – beaten, bleeding, and with a swollen eye.

Chairperson for the committee, Bandile Masuku, will be present at the Protea Glen Magistrate's Court.

The little girl was still alive on Wednesday when police made the gruesome discovery following an anonymous tip-off.

She was admitted to the intensive care unit at Baragwanath Hospital.

On Friday, when her father was appearing in court for charges of her rape, attempted murder and child abuse, she succumbed to her injuries and his charge changed to murder.

This is while police investigation revealed the mother of the child knew of the abuse, resulting in her arrest.

Masuku condemned this act.

"The portfolio committee on community safety stands in solidarity with the Eldorado Park community and civil society organisations in calling for the State to oppose bail for the accused and harsh sentences to be imposed if they are found guilty."

The mother of the four-year-old is also facing a charge of defeating the ends of justice.
