JOHANNESBURG - The Methodist Church is on Sunday leading a prayer and memorial following a recent attack that resulted in the death of an e-hailing driver at Maponya Mall in Pimville, Soweto.

Earlier this week, tensions flared after e-hailing driver Mthokozisi Mvelase was shot and his car was torched outside the mall. 

He had been on the job for a few days after relocating to Johannesburg from KwaZulu-Natal.

The murder sparked widespread outrage, with community members calling for the closure of the mall for several days.

As people go about their business, a few meters away in the parking lot, members of the Methodist Church have gathered for a prayer service to honour Mvelase and two others who were 

Mvelase was killed outside the mall when he was shot and burned inside his car in what is believed to be taxi-related violence.

The two others were caught in the crossfire.

The presence of police has brought a sense of calm as members sing hymns of encouragement and pray over the affected families. 

After the prayer, the members plan to march around the lot to where Mthokozisi's car was torched with him inside.
