JOHANNESBURG - A multi-million rand grant meant to empower women, youth and disabled people from rural villages in the North West has ended up in the pockets of a board member from the National Lotteries Commission (NLC).

Advocate William Ellias Huma has been ordered by the special tribunal to pay back more than R21 million he unlawfully received from the state.

The special tribunal presides over cases brought to it by the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

Between August and September 2020, the NLC awarded two grants amounting to R21 million to the Samaritan Initiative NPO and Reagile NPC.

The companies of these directors comprised the wives, nieces and nephews of Advocate William Huma, who was a board member of the commission.

SIU spokesperson, Kaizer Kganyago, said the money was used to purchase a chicken farm.

"The SIU investigation found the funds were misappropriated by Silverlite Trading, which Huma took control over as a sole director. The farm is now in a dilapidated state and has never benefited the community of Marikana."

The SIU has also been granted a preservation order of R10 million, which is the proceeds of sale from Huma's Waterkloof property.
