JOHANNESBURG - Civil society leaders meeting under the C20 banner have hit out at the slow uptake of transformation policies by governments across the world.

The C20 is the G20 leg representing the voices of civil groups, including non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

The group tabled its initial policy draft brief in Pretoria on Wednesday.

The final policy pack is expected to make recommendations on global governance, food security, financial justice, education and health.

C20 chairperson Thulani Tshefuta said world leaders need to pay attention to the recommendations and demands of organised civil society.

He said a failure to answer calls for economic and social development will have a devastating impact on communities.

“The transformation agenda is under siege. The anti-transformation voice keeps on being emboldened and organised without any shame. Equality cannot be achieved without raising the base of the marginalised people through the deliberate implementation of measures that support empowerment and transformation.

“In the manner in which scales are so uneven in South Africa, you say minus transformation, and you’re basically saying our society will forever be, and that cannot be accepted.”
