Scotland-based accusers of convicted paedophile Iain Wares have described seeing him again as “spooky”, confusing, and deeply upsetting.

Wares is facing 90 charges relating to the sexual and physical abuse of more than 60 boys in the United Kingdom, dating back over five decades during his time as a teacher in Scotland.

The 86-year-old taught at Edinburgh Academy and Fettes College in the 1960s and 1970s.

His extradition hearing in the Simon’s Town Magistrates Court was postponed on Thursday to 28 April 2026.

Three of Wares’ accusers from Scotland travelled to Cape Town to attend his court appearance.

George Scott said seeing his abuser for the first time in nearly five decades was unsettling.

"It’s quite spooky seeing that person. It’s 48 years ago, in my case, when I spent 10 days in hospital as a result of it. I’m still kind of processing it."

Roy Hurhangee said he felt a sense of satisfaction seeing Wares in court.

"It’s been 51 years since I’ve seen that monster, and that’s what he is essentially. I really had to come here to confront my demon, and I did just that."

Wares is expected to be sentenced in Cape Town in May for sexually abusing a former pupil at Rondebosch Boys’ Primary School in the 1980s.
