JOHANNESBURG - The Department of Correctional Services has reinstated five prison wardens accused of assaulting and murdering an inmate at the Johannesburg prison.

The officials face murder charges after allegedly beating inmate Dumisane Ngwenya in 2022.

Ngwenya was admitted to hospital after sustaining serious injuries and later died.

After their arrest, the prison officials were soon released on R2,000 bail each.

A report by the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services has suggested the assault of an inmate is likely the main cause of his death.

It also suggested that an internal investigation be undertaken, and a report be submitted to the inspectorate.

The report also highlights that the nurse on duty at the time understated the injuries suffered by Ngwenya.

Ngwenya’s aunt said she was disheartened to see the accused out on bail.

"I don’t understand how they got reinstated at work. I am sure people fear them now after what they did. I just want them to get life imprisonment for what they did."

The report also suggested that the officers get training on the use of force.
