A husband and wife were rescued after their double surf ski capsized during a paddle from Fish Hoek to Miller's Point.
The couple was able to alert emergency services using the NSRI SafeTrx app, which played a crucial role in saving their lives on Wednesday, 20 August. The NSRI (National Sea Rescue Institute) commended them for using the app, which provided real-time GPS coordinates to rescuers.
The NSRI Simon’s Town duty crew was activated after the NSRI Emergency Operations Centre received the SafeTrx emergency alert. The couple was located offshore near Fisherman’s Beach, Simon’s Town, clinging to their overturned surf ski.
NSRIrescue swimmers were deployed from a rescue craft and secured both the couple and their craft in the water. Both individuals were found to be in serious condition, suffering from hypothermia.
Initial medical treatment was provided on scene before they were transported to the NSRI rescue base, where CMR paramedics continued their care.
After being warmed, they were released and required no further medical assistance.
"The app seems like a good thing to have."
