JOHANNESBURG – The Springbok Women beat Italy 29-24 at the Women’s Rugby World Cup clash on Sunday in York, England.

This means they move into the top ten and progress to the Women’s Rugby World Cup play-offs for the first time in their history.

"I am so proud of everyone, this was really a team effort, not only from all here in England, but also our support structures back home, and this performance justifies the belief SA Rugby had in us," said Springbok Women head coach Swys de Bruin

"We had a plan on how to beat Italy, and credit to my coaches, as it worked to a tee. Our first phase helped us to score some tries, while we also outplayed them in the backs with some delightful tries," said De Bruin.

This is also the first in four attempts against the Italians that South Africa has won.

South African Rugby Union president, Mark Alexander, praised the team for their achievements.

"On behalf of the South African Rugby Union, I extend my deepest admiration and pride. You have made history, and you have made us proud. It was a performance that transcended sport. It was not only a remarkable victory – it was a demonstration of what it means to be South African.

"You showed grit, determination, and belief in one another, and have inspired the whole nation. You showed us once again that rugby is more than a game for us – it is a force for unity, pride, and hope," said Alexander.

The Bok Women complete their pool programme with a match against world number four, France, who are ranked eight places above them at the start of the tournament, at Franklin’s Gardens in Northampton at 17h45 (SA time) on Sunday.
