JOHANNESBURG - The City of Ekurhuleni's chief information officer, Moloko Monyepao, is facing a disciplinary hearing following allegations of negligence that cost the municipality billions in revenue.
Monyepao was suspended in April after a preliminary investigation found that he failed to act on a billing error, which undercharged more than 1,600 households for electricity.
The error cost the city R2 billion, sparking concerns about the accuracy of its electricity meter reading systems.
Ekurhuleni Mayor Doctor Xhakaza insists that Monyepao must be held accountable for his alleged negligence.
"We instituted decisive consequence management, which resulted in the suspension of the CIO and there is currently an ongoing disciplinary hearing taking place. We also launched a robust back-billing programme to ensure accountability and to recover the funds rightfully owed to the city."
