JOHANNESBURG - Talks on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in the judiciary have taken centre stage at the J20 Summit, where world jurists are gathered.
Heads of judiciaries from G20 countries are attending the constitutional courts and supreme courts summit in Sandton on Wednesday.
The summit is one of many being hosted in the run-up to the G20 Summit to be hosted in Johannesburg in November.
The theme of this year’s J20 Summit is "Justice in a time of change", with talks among delegates on Wednesday taking a sharp focus on artificial intelligence.
In her address, Justice Mandisa Maya noted the benefits that AI could provide in the work of the judiciary.
"It has been quite exciting to discover that tools for legal research, transcription, and automated administrative functions can free judges to focus on the core human element of adjudication services."
But she said the digital transformation must be approached with a balanced perspective.
"While the use of this tool has the potential to be a powerful ally in legal practice, recent cases have also revealed how its use can also undermine professional ethics – and the integrity of our jurisprudence."
This afternoon, jurists from Brazil, Saudi Arabia and South Africa will discuss the use of AI in the courts.
