CAPE TOWN - The Cape Amalgamated Taxi Association (CATA) has described the murder of one of its members from Lwandle, near Strand, as a big loss.
The man was shot multiple times while in his car earlier on Thursday.
Five people were killed and nine more injured in taxi-related violence in Philippi, Khayelitsha and Macassar two weeks ago.
A feud between CATA and CODETA over a route to Somerset West is believed to be behind the attacks.
The provincial mobility department has been granted a court order forcing CATA and CODETA to resolve their disputes peacefully.
If they fail to do so, the department can impose tougher sanctions on the taxi operators in Cape Town, such as closing the M18 route to Somerset West.
CATA spokesperson Nkululeko Sityebi: "I can confirm that there was a shooting that took place this morning. The member is a legit member of CATA and a former secretary of CATA Lwandle."
The court interdict is in place until 9 October. That’s when the court will decide whether to declare it a permanent order.
