Cape Town police seize 83 firearms in crime hotspot areas

CAPE TOWN - A total of 83 firearms have been confiscated in Cape Town by police over the last week.
Operations were carried out in hotspot areas such as Mitchells Plain, Manenberg, Grassy Park, Bishop Lavis and Philippi.
Police said assault rifles, a semi-automatic weapon, and several handguns were among the firearms confiscated.

Western Cape Police Commissioner Thembisile Patekile said eliminating gang activity remains a top priority.
"One of the most recent apprehensions on Monday, the 1st of September 2025, (0:52) an intelligence-driven operation in Lentegeur, Mitchell's Plain, uncovered a significant arms cache. Police seized 19 firearms and 1,500 rounds of ammunition, marking a major breakthrough in disrupting the flow of weapons to end violent crimes."
